Long Division

Here is a quick video that showcases a method for solving division problems using the algorithm.  This strategy really helps students to understand what they are doing when they use the algorithm.  It also helps to reinforce place value understanding.

We are currently dividing double digit numbers by single digit numbers using this strategy in class.

Fan Letter Reminder

Just a friendly reminder to please return your fan letter to your child if you have not already done so.  I would absolutely hate for a student to not have a note of encouragement from home to read on the morning of testing.  Our first NWEA testing date is on Monday, January 30th.  If possible, please return all fan letters by Friday, January 27th. Thank you so much for your support!

DIBELS = WOW!!

I am beyond proud of each and every student for their DIBELS today! All of you worked SO hard to reach both your individual goal and benchmark of 115! With growth mindsets and perseverance each and every student met their individual goal! Most importantly, you came together as a class community by cheering each other on and supporting one another!  I am so proud to be your teacher! Hold your chins up high and be proud of your accomplishments! As long as you believe in yourself you can do anything and you proved that today! Way to go 3L!

Also, thank you so very much to all of the parents and families for your support at home during testing!

Notes of Encouragement for NWEA

Please keep an eye out for this letter coming home this week! :)

Dear Family,

NWEA and DIBELS testing is just around the corner! Thank you in advance for making sure that your child is in school on the days that our class is testing.  We will be testing on:
  • Wednesday, January 25 (DIBELS)
  • Monday, January 30 (NWEA reading)
  • Tuesday, February 7 (NWEA math)

NWEA makeups will take place after each testing session for students that need more time.  There is no time limit.

The importance of a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on the morning of the test cannot be stressed enough! In class, we will be reading Winner’s Never Quit by Mia Hamm.  Just like an athlete must always do their best and never give up, students must do the same!  Our theme for testing will be to be game day ready!

Athletes also need encouragement from their fans! THAT’S YOU!On the next page you will find a baseball.  Please write an encouraging note to your child inside the baseball.  Cut it out and return it to school in the attached paper bag so that your child cannot peek! On the morning of one of our tests, I will give your note to your child to remind them that you believe in them!

As always, thank you for your continued support!

DIBELS testing is coming up!

Next week, our class will be completing the DIBELS winter benchmark.  On Wednesday, January 25th students will be reading three passages with the reading specialists.  Each passage is timed and the third grade benchmark / goal for this point in the year is to read 115 words in one minute with fluency and accuracy.  Our class has been working hard to reach these goals and students are excited to do their best!

Please take a few extra minutes each day to read with your child to prepare for this benchmark assessment.  Reading for just a few extra minutes a day will help to boost their confidence and help them to become a better reader.  Also, remind your child that it is okay if they do not meet the 115 words per minute! All that matters is that they do their personal best! Finally, remind them that a positive attitude is most important! If they go into this benchmark with a growth mindset and an "I CAN DO IT!" attitude they will reach their goal! It's okay to not be there.... YET! Just keep working!

As always, thank you for your continued support at home!
