Descriptive Writing - Pumpkins!

Today used our sense of smell, sight, and touch to explore pumpkins and recorded our observations.  We then turned our observations into sentences using a graphic organizer.  Finally, we created a paragraph with a main idea idea, four descriptive details, and a closing sentence.  We had a great time while also working on the writing process!

All of our seed projects came out fantastic! A round of applause to everyone for a job well done!  I can't believe the variety of seeds collected by our students.  Way to go!

ESL

Today Miss Hutchinson, the ESL teacher here at Hooksett Memorial School visited our classroom!  She introduced herself so that we can all give her a friendly greeting by name in the hallway.  She then showed us flags from different countries, and we had a great time trying to guess where they were from!  Finally, we listened to a story in Spanish! Miss Hutchinson asked us to retell the story to her.  We quickly realized how it feels to be an ESL student!  We wrapped up by listening to the story My Name Is Yoon.  It was a fantastic and fun lesson!

Beauty and the Beast

After reading the fairy tale in class, we then used a venn diagram to compare and contrast it to the Disney movie.  We used Kidspiration for a fun and innovative way to show our thinking.  See below for our work!

Head School Journal

Head School journal assignments are due on Wednesday, October 15.  For this activity, students are to create a journal entry as if they are a student from the 1800s.  Please see below for a sample writing.   A detailed description of the activity as well as a list of words that students can use to help them brainstorm was sent home earlier this week.  Reminder: this assignment must be a minimum of 5 sentences and should not be written in one draft.   The expectation is that students complete all aspects of the writing process from brainstorming, to revisiting, and editing before submitting a final copy.  Students can type their work if they wish too but it is not required.  Have fun!

Chapter Two Math Assessment: Tuesday, October 14

Our chapter two math assessment will be on Tuesday, October, 14.  In this chapter, students have been composing and decomposing numbers in order to find the sum or difference of whole numbers less than 10,000.  Students have also been rounding numbers to determine if sums or differences are reasonable.  Please see below for the chapter wrap up.
