Writing Process

This week, students in 3L completed part of the writing process.  First, they brainstormed their thinking, then they completed an outline, next they wrote their first draft.  After they completed their paragraph, they met with a peer and discussed what they could improve for their final copy. Students talked about the quality of the main idea, closing sentence and supporting details as well as transition words, sentence structure, and grammar.  Next week, students will complete their second draft, taking into account the feedback from their peer edit, and finally they will use a rubric for a self evaluation / reflection before having a conference with Mrs. Largy.

Bar Models

GREAT strategy for bar models

Some students in our class have been using different colors to help them with bar models.  The colors allows them to better see what each part of the bar model stands for in relation to the word problem.  This is not required, but many students have said that it has helped them tremendously when solving two step real world application problems!

Way to go, Anesa!

Anesa has been working so hard to meet her AR goal and this morning her hard work paid off! Way to go!

Habitat Projects

Students will soon be starting to create their animals and animal habitats in art.  In class, students selected an animal and have started to research about their animal and their habitat.  Last week, we painted our boxes and this week students will continue to work on their projects during art.  The art room will be supplying paint, construction paper and basic supplies for this project.  If students want to bring in additional materials they are welcome to do so but it is not required.  Examples of things that students have used for this project include:

sugar cubes
sugar
toilet paper / paper towerl rolls
pipe cleaners
fake / real leaves
pom-poms
fake animals such as fish etc.
sponges
pine cones
marshmellows

Be creative! Students can bring their materials in at any time and store them in the classroom until our next art class.

Hip Hip Hooray Julian!

Julian has met his AR goal and increased it!  Way to go!

Make a Friend

In our class, we now have a Make a Friend board.  Students that are feeling anxious about not having someone to play with at recess or simply want to try something new at recess but are nervous to invite themselves, can put their names on this board before lunch.  The rest of the class will see the names on the board and will invite these students to join them.  This will help those students that are feeling anxious about recess to make a plan! It also encourages students to get to know all of their classmates.

Extra Math Help / Challenge

From now on, students that want extra math support can come in during recess on Friday.  Students must write their name on the board before lunch in order to come in and must be able to communicate exactly what skill they need to work on.  For example, subtracting across zeroes, fact fluency, solving 2 step word problems, addition with regrouping etc.  Students that want an extra challenge can also come in and try to solve some thinking caps / enrichment problems.

Bar Modeling for PARENTS!

My goal for this event is to help parents understand more about bar models before we begin chapter five.  I will be sending home a letter with more information about this event as well as an RSVP date.
