Measurement Homework

This week for homework, students had to measure an object using both standard and non-standard forms of measurement.  They then had to find a way to present this information to the class.  Many students created posters to display their information and some students decided to use a blog or Powerpoint!  Check out all of the great work below!

NWEA Testing Tomorrow

Tomorrow morning students will be taking the NWEA reading test.  Please make sure to get lots of sleep tonight and don't forget to eat breakfast in the morning! Most importantly, if you think you can do it then you CAN! All you need to be successful is a positive attitude.

Design Challenge

This week, students worked in groups to complete two area and perimeter design challenges!

For the first activity students designed gardens using area and perimeter.  This was the warm up for our big design challenge that featured lots of rules / constraints! Next, students created ten polygons, each with a perimeter of exactly 30 cm. Then they had to create a dog house for Penny, a character from a story we read.  Their dog house could only use three of their polygons, each polygon could touch another by only 2 cm, and finally, the total area of the dog house could not exceed 100 square centimeters.  Check our their creations below!

A Fruit Celebration

A Fruit Celebration

Hooksett Memorial is celebrating our success and focused learning next week! As the month of January is coming to an end, we would like to recognize and celebrate everyone’s hard work. Each class will have their own celebration on Friday,
January 29, 2016 during their snack.

If you would like to donate a healthy fruit snack for the celebration, please fill out the form that was sent home earlier in the week and return it by Monday, January 25, 2015. To support our healthy HMS community, we are asking for fruits only.

New Hampshire Mock Election

On February 2, 2016, students will have the opportunity to cast their vote for a presidential candidate in the New Hampshire Mock Election! After voting is over, the results will be shared with the entire school as well as to New Hampshire Public Television, who is running the program.  In class, we will be watching a short video about what Primaries and Caucuses are, but we will not be discussing candidates in particular.  Because this is a primary mock election, students must choose a single party before voting. Only the Democratic and Republican parties will appear on the ballot.  For more information about the election as well as resources to help your child research and understand more about each presidential candidate before casting their vote on February 2nd please visit www.nhptv.org/mockelection.

Math Club

On Friday, our Math Club discussed fractions.  We talked about what fractions are and the difference between the numerator and denominator.  Next, students used fraction circles to compare fractions. Math Club is an optional time once a week for students to come in during recess and receive extra support in mathematics or complete enrichment work.

This week in math...

Our class will be working on area / perimeter in math this week.  Students will be designing a garden using the area model and will determine the amount of garden soil and fencing they will need. Students will also use array paper to create a picture and will determine the area and perimeter of their artistic creation using multiplication facts they know.  This week's homework does include area and perimeter but this skill will not be assessed at this point in the year.  Next week, we will continue to work on multiplication as we begin chapter seven in our Math in Focus program.

A new math challenge winner!

Way to go, Quintin!

Way to go Kyra!

Kyra already has 71% of her AR goal! For having the largest percent toward her goal, she gets to sit at the teacher's desk for the day! Keep up the good work!
