WEAR PINK TOMORROW

There will be an award for the boy and girl with the most pink on in our class tomorrow!

AR

Don't forget about AR! Be sure to be reading books in your Lexile Level during your free time.  You don't have to read by yourself! You can read with an adult, a friend, a brother or sister etc.  Once you finish, log on to AR and take the test.  April vacation is GREAT time to get reading and earn some AR points.

Arianna's Deisgn

This morning, Arianna decided to create a fake school during calendar math fact fluency.  She created the rooms and worked to find the area and perimeter of her school.  What a great way to apply what we are leaning in class to real life.  Way to go, Arianna!

Movie Tomorrow

Our class has worked EXTRA hard this week, and as a result we will be watching a movie tomorrow! If you have a DVD or VHS rated G at home bring it in tomorrow.  We will vote in the morning to see what movie we will watch.  The movie MUST be rated G.  Thank you!

Last Day for Donations

Tomorrow is the last day to bring in a donation for Pink in the Rink! This is a local organization raising money for the American Cancer Society.  The class that raises the most money will earn an ice cream party! Remember - no amount is too small! Donate whatever you can as every little bit counts!  So far, over half of our class has generously donated! Let's have 100% participation in 3L!

More Donations are Rolling In!

This morning, Paige, Quintin, Reagan Logan, Ismael, Emily and Kallie all donated to Pink in the Rink! We are well on our way to 100% class participation!

Makenzie and Ava's Blog

Over the weekend, Makenzie and Ava created a math blog! They will update it from time to time to include more information! Check it out here!

Makenzie and Ava are the teachers!

Today, Makenzie and Ava were the teachers!  Over the weekend, they created a Powerpoint about fractions for Ava's mom.  They even created a test for her to take (she got 100%)! Then, they made fraction worksheets for the class and were the teachers for today's math lesson.  Way to go above and beyond girls!

Units of Measure

Today, our class learned about the importance of including a unit of measure when talking about area and perimeter.  We shared lots of great real-life examples of why units of measure are important. A few are listed below:

Emily's family is putting in a pool.  Imagine if they sent the measurements to the pool company in centimeters instead of meters?  You wouldn't be able to swim!

Justin's dad is a contractor.  Imagine if he didn't include a unit of measure and the builders thought he meant meters when he really meant feet? The house might be a mansion when it wasn't supposed to be.

Kallie's family is measuring for new countertops.  Kyra's mom is paining their office.  Makenzie's mom is building a garden.  Paige's dad is making a porch.  Ava's aunt it putting in new floors.  These are all great examples of times when you need to include the unit of measure or else you might have a big mistake on your hands!

More Generous Students!

Today, Taegan, Donovan, Makenzie, Connor and Kallie very generously donated to Pink in the Rink!  Remember no amount is too small!  Every cent counts!

Thank you for your generosity!

Jstin, Arushi, Anesa and Trenton already very generously donated to Pink in the Rink! Way to go!

Using geo - boards

Today, we used geo-board and on the boards we found the number of square units. To get started, we got to play with the geo boards. Next ,we did full squares and half squares to half make one whole and we added them all together. Last but not least, we had fun with the geo boards. That is all about what we did with the geo boards.

Wear Pink Friday

EXPO NIGHT IS TONIGHT!

Don't forget to come by Expo Night tonight! This event showcases all of the hard work we have been doing at HMS and runs from 5:30pm to 7:0pm on Monday, April 18th.  I hope to see everyone there!

Area and perimeter by Arushi and Taegan

Today we did area and perimeter activities such as measuring the floor, a book, sticky notes and more. We learned area and perimeter while having fun! With these objects we filled them in with square tiles and figured out the area and perimeter. We got to go around each station. We had these papers we had to fill out at every station to record our thinking. So when we put the tiles on the object we had to find the area and the perimeter and write it on the paper.  In group one there was a square tile on the floor. In group two there was a book and you had to put the tiles on the book. In group three we had to put red tiles on a sticky note. In group four there was a base hundred block. In the last group, it had a weird shape that was group five.  We discovered that we didn't have to put the tiles on everything but could use multiplication or repeated addition to find area.  That is what we did on April 18, 2016. Thank you for reading this post.

Math Challenge

There was no math challenge winner this week, but three cheers to Teagan for being the only one to submit a challenge answer.  She was SO close to the correct answer of 21 with her response of 20. Way to go Taegan!

$2 for Field Trip

Just a friendly reminder that students need to bring in $2.00 with their permission slip for Head School.  This money is a straight donation to cover the cost of supplies for Head School.  Thank you.

A Great Math Discovery!

In math, we have discovered that when the numerator and denominator are the same you have a whole, or one.  Today, Connor had an amazing question:  "Is 0/0 a whole or zero?".  The class got right to work to prove their thinking!  After some great conversations the class decided that there is an exception to every rule and that 0/0 is equal to zero, not one.  Way to go Connor for asking such a great question!

The fraction Poster we Made in Class

We are going to tell you about a fraction poster we made in class. To get started, we organized fraction pieces from least to greatest and then glued them. Next, we made a very big number line the size of the whole entire thing. We proved our thinking with common denominators.  Then we went over it in sharpie and traced the fraction circles and then colored them in. That is what we did on the fraction poster.

Trenton's Amazing Dance

Today, we went to Cawley Middle School, and we watched the Dear Edwina play. At the end of the play the cast picked some students to go up on the stage and dance with them. Trenton was lucky! He got on stage and did the hula in front of everybody. Trenton was brave. He also had great dance moves!

April Fools Winners!

Today in class we were given a worksheet.  The directions were to read all instructions on the page before getting started.  They said to do things like write your name, organize your desk, go to the board and write your name in your best handwriting, and shake hands with a person next to you. BUT if you followed the directions, number 14 said to only complete the FIRST question Happy April Fool's Day! Only Arianna and Donovan followed the directions.  Other students didn't follow directions and did everything on the paper.  What a fun activity it was!
